Mason (18) National Diploma in Horse Management
Before starting this course I was doing
‘A’ levels but felt that I needed
something more hands on and practical. I had
worked at a yard for a couple of months and
also used to ride and worked at a riding school
when I was younger.
I chose to go to Moulton College as I saw
it had excellent facilities and would provide
the practical aspects to education that I was
looking for. I attended an open day and had
an opportunity to see the facilities for myself
and speak to tutors, this gave me a good idea
of what the course would be like. I was also
made to feel very welcome.
Having completed the first part of the course,
the National Award, I have gained many new skills
in working with and dealing with horses. My
confidence and riding has improved greatly and
I have made many friends that I’m sure
I will keep for life.
Once I have completed the full National Diploma,
I plan to go on to university. I would like
to study animal biology and this course has
given me the foundation to progress to degree
level.
When I first started at Moulton College I did
not know what I wanted to do in the future.
Now I am looking forward to going to university
knowing that I definitely want to continue improving
my theoretical knowledge and practical skills
and knowing that I plan to work with animals.

I spent the 30 years prior to my course as
a Police Officer exposing me to a range of life
experiences some of which were positive and
some not so good. I selected Moulton College
because the College offers very impressive equine
facilities and after retiring from the Police
Service I wanted to re-train in a totally different
area of work. The Equine Management course provides
me with such an opportunity.
The course has allowed me to develop and improve
my IT skills, develop research and analytical
skills and, as ‘corny’ as it may
sound, it allows me to better understand my
own strengths and weaknesses. The course has
provided me with increased self confidence that
comes from greater knowledge which I am able
to transfer to my own horse management. Horse
riding has been a hobby throughout my life and
recently (2 years ago) I bought my own horse,
my intention is to progress and compete in low
level dressage events.
