Dominic
Elsworth - National Hunt Jockey.
Here in his own words is Dominics
life so far:
Recently
I was asked to describe the emotions I felt when winning
the 'Tote Becher Chase' at Aintree Racecourse over the Grand
National fences last November, the 24th to be precise. I
couldn't.
That
is the bizarre thing about horseracing you discover emotions
that you never knew existed.

It
all began in 1996, upon leaving school I embarked in a career
I had dreamt of since I was a small boy. I was employed by Mrs
Sue Smith, wife of legendary showjumper Harvey at their yard in
Bingley, West Yorkshire.
The
'boss' suggested I joined the Northern Racing College, Doncaster
to further my education, initially on a 12-week residential course
during which time I achieved NVQ level 1 in racehorse care and
began working towards achieving level 2.
On
arrival at the college I was abit apprehensive, but was soon put
at ease by the friendly instructors and I have to admit I had
the most amazing time, learning alot about riding techniques as
well as horsecare. I had to work hard but the relaxed atmosphere
gave us scope to 'develop our personalities'.
To
date I have ridden 60 winners. If anyone reading this is contemplating
a career in racing, in what ever capacity I would say go for it,
there is nothing like the thrill racing exposes you to.
A
good starting point is to enrol at the Northern
Racing College not only to receive first class tuition
but also to land the job you are currently dreaming of as the
college has contacts with almost every racehorse trainer in the
country. The staff will give advice and support when ever you
require it throughout your career.
Maybe
one day you will be able to put into words 'that feeling' let
me know if you can, but most of all enjoy it.
