— the world’s first
combination body protector and air jacket
which can now be used in competition.
The revolutionary P2-RS has taken 18 months
to develop by Point Two and Hows Racesafe,
together with safety experts and leading
riders such as eventer Oliver Townend
and jockey Ruby Walsh.
The P2-RS is eligible for use in UK competition,
thanks to its RS2010 Racesafe “chassis”,
which is approved to BETA 2009 Level 3
The P2-RS inflates in the blink of an
eye — at speeds of up to 0.093 of
a second
The P2-RS is more convenient than using
a separate Racesafe body protector and
Point Two ProAir jacket — and almost
20% lighter
How does it work?
The Point Two P2-RS works in exactly the
same way as the Point Two ProAir. A lanyard
attached to the jacket is clipped onto
an attachment on the horse’s saddle.
Once the rider leaves the saddle during
a fall, the lanyard detaches itself from
the Point Two Hybrid, triggering the release
of CO2 gas from a canister.
In up to 0.093 of a second, the air bag
inflates on the outside of the body protector,
offering almost instantaneous, enhanced
protection to all the major thoracic and
upper abdominal organs, the spine and
the collar of the neck.
What sizes are available and where
can I buy it?
The P2-RS comes in adult’s sizes
from XS to XL, and is fitted in exactly
the same way as the Racesafe body protector.
Point Two recommends riders have the P2-RS
fitted by an expert. Each garment is sold
with a spare canister of CO2 gas, to be
used for a test inflation at the shop
at point of sale, so riders can experience
the P2-RS being activated. Prices start
at £600 for the adult’s P2-RS
— a child’s version will be
available later this year.
What is the difference between
the P2-RS and the ProAir?
The ProAir is an air vest on its own,
which many people prefer to use while
hacking, schooling or hunting because
it is so unrestrictive yet offers a safer
ride. While we have complete trust in
Point Two products, we always maintain
that the safest way to wear the ProAir
is over the top of a traditional body
protector. And as some riders will know,
you are not allowed to use the ProAir
on its own in UK competition. The P2-RS
is a more convenient, comfortable and
lighter solution for riders who need or
want to wear both a traditional body protector
and an air vest.
Technical information
The RS2010 Racesafe body protector, approved
to BETA 2009 Level 3, is incorporated
into the P2-RS, with the added protection
of Point Two air vest technology.
The P2-RS has passed the European Standard
EN 13158:2009 Level 3 both when uninflated
and inflated. In addition, rigorous checks
have been made on the inflated P2-RS to
ensure it did not stop riders rolling
away from danger when on
the ground.
