The Benefits of Electric Fencing
Electric fencing is widely used,
but is it used to its full advantage?
Whether you wish to introduce pasture
management, find a cost effective and visually pleasing
alternative to post and rail or protect your existing
fencing; electric fencing has the answers. There are
many off the shelf kits available, not all are suitable
for the many applications for which an electric fence
can be used. The key is to have a clear view of what
you want to achieve and with little effort, the results
will follow.
Post and rail is costly and is prone
to the chewing and rubbing which quickly degrades the
appearance of the fence. By adding a line of rope or
tape along the top rail will discourage your horses
contact and provide a line of power which you can use
to ‘tap’ off a temporary line to effortlessly divide
the enclosure. Tensioning the fence line is important.
Effective tensioning of the line will allow larger spacing
between posts and also reduces movement which, over
time, breaks down the conductors and renders the fence
in effective. The ideal place to tension is at an end
or straining post, sprung gate handles can be used to
add tension in a temporary context.
The method of using tensioned tape
and rope can be extended to a multi line system which
is an economical and effective alternative to that of
full post and rail fence. If using tape, choose an insulator
which holds the tape tightly, this will reduce wear
and extend the life of the product. 40mm tape offers
the greatest level of visibility but can be prone to
ware if installed in exposed areas, rope is a good alternative
with excellent durability.
