A Fly not a worm.
The two most common species are G.intestinalis
and G.nasalis. Larvae take 10-12mths to develop
into adults, as such treatment of bots is required
one yearly, recommended in the late autumn/winter
prior to larvae maturing in the spring, and after
the adult flies die off. Removal of eggs from the
horses is an effective aid in controlling bots.
Symptoms:
Mild damage to the mouth and gums, and may cause
stomach ulcers.
Size/Appearance
Eggs (laid on horse's coat) - up to 2mm long,
creamy white colour.
Larvae - up to 20mm long, reddish-orange in colour.
