Bots (Gasterophilus spp) EQUEST IVER
A Fly not a worm. The two most common species are G.intestinalis and G.nasalis. Larvae take 10-12mths to develop into adults, as such treatment of bots is required one yearly, recommended in the late autumn/winter prior to larvae maturing in the spring, and after the adult flies die off. Removal of eggs from the horses is an effective aid in controlling bots.

Symptoms:
Mild damage to the mouth and gums, and may cause stomach ulcers.

Size/Appearance
Eggs (laid on horse's coat) - up to 2mm long, creamy white colour.
Larvae - up to 20mm long, reddish-orange in colour.

Ascarids (Parascaris equorum) EQUEST IVER FBZ PYR
Mainly found in foals, as horses develop immunity to this worm

Size/Appearance
Up to 10cm long, white in colour

Liver
Lungs

Small Intestine

Symptoms:
Itchy anus - causing tail rubbing

 

Small Redworms (incl.encysted stages) (Small Strongyles/Cyathostomes) EQUEST FBZ (5 day)
Now the most common worm found in horses. The life-cycle of the small redworm is from 6 weeks up to many months.

Symptoms:
Diarrhoea, rapid and severe weight loss, colic and can even KILL your horses

Size/Appearance
Up to 2.5cm long,thin and reddish in colour

Larval Migration:
Cysts in gut wall

Sites of Adult:
Caecum
Colon

 

 

Pinworm (Oxyuris equi) EQUEST IVER FBZ PYR
Not thought to be harmful, more an irritation to your horse

Size/Appearance
Up to 10cm long, white in colour

Larval Migration:
Nil

Colon

Large Redworms (large Strongyles) EQUEST IVER FBZ PYR
No longer a problem at the same levels as they use to be, the most common species of large redworm are Strongylus vulgaris and Strongylus edentatus.

Symptoms:
Can cause colic, sometimes fatal, by blocking blood vessels

Size/Appearance
Up to 5cm long, dark-red in colour

Larval Migration:
Liver & peritoneum
Blood Vessels (esp those to to intestines)

Sites of Adult:
Caecum
Colon

 

 

Tapeworm (Anoplocephala spp) EQUITAPE PYR(X2)
Anoplocephala perfoliata is the main species in the UK. Other species have been reported but rarely cause disease.

Size/Appearance
Up to 20cm long, white in colour. Rarer species can be up to 80cm long.

Larval Migration:
Nil

Sites of Adult:
Caecum

Symptoms:
Can cause colic, sometimes fatal, by blocking blood vessels
