Move over George Clooney, now there are two new ‘flavours’ of the month!

Having declared himself “flavour of the month” after relinquishing his role in ER, now two even cooler new flavours are set to make our pulses race and rock our horses’ thirst buds!

Following the success of Horse Quencher UK’s mint and apple flavour all-natural mix which gets horses drinking immediately, the company is launching two new flavours, butterscotch and root beer, to add to its already best-selling range.

The two new flavours capture the essence of Horse Quencher and give horse owners two further choices of tangy roots and hops (think a mellower Dr Pepper) or tasty toffee to entice their horses to drink water when they want them to.

But what of these very American new flavours, how will they go down with UK horse owners? Lucinda Stapleton of Horse Quencher UK says: “Horses tend to be fed flavours from food that is cheap and local, so what they are offered will vary around the world. We offer horses’ apples in the UK, but in Japan they are expensive and people gift-wrap them and give them to each other as presents. In the States, horses like root beer and butterscotch.”

Quencher USA Nancy Issenman’s husband David, a Superior Court Judge, had a hand to play in the root beer introduction after he discovered his horse enjoyed root beer barrel sweets. In America restaurants offer root beer as well as mint sweets at the end of a meal. After one particular dinner, David grabbed a handful of each, went home and offered both to his horse and was pleasantly surprised when he went for the root beer. The butterscotch flavour was introduced after trial tastings were left at the start of the Tevis Trail, the world’s best known and most difficult equestrian endurance ride, and horses couldn’t get enough of the toffee-flavoured drink.

Lucinda says: “We all know the frustration of our horses not drinking when they need to. These two new flavours combine the same high quality ingredients as the apple and mint flavour Horse Quencher and give horse owners two further choices to entice their otherwise fussy friends to drink. As humans we have taste preferences, horses do too. We have had some excellent feedback on the new flavours from existing customers, including the Household Cavalry whose trusty steeds have taken a strong liking to the root beer flavour!”

Dressage rider, Sarah-Jane Prew is an advocate of Horse Quencher and swears by the product for all of her competition horses. In particular her husband’s dressage horse, Major, is a butterscotch buff! “I tried five horses on Horse Quencher and all of them loved it,” she says.”They drink every time Horse Quencher is offered which is such a relief in warm weather or when travelling as I have always been concerned about their hydration at the end of a long day. Two of my dressage horses loved all of the flavours but my husband's horse, Major, definitely preferred the butterscotch. We are very pleased that we can now stock up on it, it has made such a big difference to them all.”

Horses are particular about the water they drink, and may not drink water they're not used to, says David Scott, senior practitioner at the Isle Veterinary Group in Ely. As a veterinary surgeon and rider I usually find that this is when their fluid needs are at their highest. For years, horse owners have tried numerous tricks to get their horses to drink, adding apple juice, molasses or other treats to the water. Horse Quencher, he said, has been a hit with most horses he's given it to.

The new flavours are available in sachets and 25-serving tubs for a RRP of £3 and £30 respectively.
